Sunset Zoo partners with schools in the Wamego, Manhattan, and Junction City area every spring for its Cans for Conservation Program. This free, 6-week long program encourages recycling through multiple layers. First, schools compete agains each other to see who is the ultimate recycler and earn the right to display the Cans for Conservation traveling trophy. Second, each school is set a recycling goal. If they meet their goal, the entire student body receives free admission to Sunset Zoo's Earth Day special event. In addition to the competitive motivations, each participating school receives weekly programs when Sunset Zoo collects the aluminum for recycling. All the funds raised through the aluminum recycled is given to a field conservation project.

Sunset Zoo offers free admission to the Zoo for 501 c3 non-profit groups within Manhattan and reduced admission rates for non-profits outside Manhattan.
