Services/products to be provided to schools:

We are currently working with schools in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, via a grant from Kansas Department of Transportation.

The Walking School Bus is one of many programs at Bridging The Gap, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit. The benefits of working with Bridging The Gap's Walking School Bus Program are: we can provide sign up forms, waivers, recruitment, background checks on parent volunteers (we will cover the fee), and training sessions for the ‘drivers’ (the parent walkers). The benefits for the kids are increased health, decreased risk of childhood diabetes, decreased pollution near the school, increased classroom focus, etc. A side benefit is the kids have fun! As one youngster said during International Walk to School Day: “we usually get two recesses, but today we get three”!

Describe your service(s) or product(s):

A Walking School Bus is a group of children walking to and/or from school accompanied by trained adult volunteers. It is one of the Safe Routes to School components and is safe, fun and healthy way to educate and encourage more students to walk to and/or from school. The program has two most common structures. The first operates like a regular school bus where the volunteer starts walking from their home and picks up children along the route to school. The other variation is where the volunteers and students meet at a central location and walk together from there.

The program can be lead by parents or teachers and can even involve valuable community members like senior citizens or high school students who are part of a leadership and community service club.
