What are Kansas Green Schools of Excellence?

Kansas Green Schools (KGS) of Excellence are schools who have worked collaboratively throughout the school year to explore, investigate, learn about and take action to green the school while integrating environmental education. Recognition is provided to schools who achieve the outlined KGS Standards of Excellence at three levels:


Standards of Excellence: Kansas Green School Recognition Criteria

Silver Globe Award: Site team established (4 meetings/year with minutes with school communication plan) , at least one educator has completed environmental education professional development, environmental education is integrated into some of grade levels and/or content areas of instruction, the school has completed two or more investigations, and has developed and implemented an action plan for one or more environmental improvement area as identified by investigations. School green team documents progress and outcomes, celebrates accomplishments and shares with school community. The school has developed a Kansas Green School pledge.

Gold Globe Award: Site team established (6 meetings/year, minutes with school communication plan) , at least two educators have completed environmental education professional development, all students are engaged in integrated environmental education and work to complete all five investigations and develop and implement an action plan with timeframe for two or more environmental improvement area as identified by these investigations. The schooll green team documents progress and outcomes, celebrates accomplishments and shares with school community. The school has developed and adopted a Kansas Green School pledge.

Green Globe Awards: Site team has been established and is comprised of at least 50% students and is led by students that engage the broader student body, (8 meetings/year, minutes with school communication plan) , two or more educators have completed environmental education professional development, environmental education is integrated at all levels and/or content areas within the school and students work to complete all five investigations and develop and implement an action plan with timeframe and cost benefit analysis for three or more environmental improvement areas as identified by investigations. The school green team documents progress and outcomes, celebrates accomplishments and shares with school community, a day of action to engage community or write a newspaper article. The school has a developed and adopted a Kansas Green Pledge and a site visit has been conducted by the KGS Program.
