How are you incorporating your environmental projects into your school's curriculum?:
The Environmental Club purchased and placed bins in every classroom that the students and teachers use for bottles, cans and Terracycling materials. The club has arranged two eco-based assemblies - 1) Craig Wood with Johnson County Health and Environment took the students on a virtual tour of the landfill and presented some ideas on how students could reduce their waste. 2) Stan Slaughter presented multiple ways to the students about how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle through songs. The club has built a mobile green house on a wooden cart that includes a worm composter on top. This cart will travel to, and be cared for by each classroom throughout the second semester. The Green Grant that Sunflower qualified for is allowing our 4th graders to travel to Earthworks, which will help develop their awareness of their impact on our planet. Our school has a Cultural Arts Night in the middle of the second semester during which the club will start making a mosaic mural using non-recyclable bottle caps. All attendees will be encouraged to help make the mosaic and the finished piece will be displayed prominently in the school.
This is the second year for the Environmental Club at Sunflower and we have doubled our membership/participation from last year. We collect and sort the recycling/Terracycling twice a month. We have diverted several garbage bags full of recycling and earned 1500 Terracycle points thus far from glue sticks and cheese packaging.
