How are you incorporating your environmental projects into your school's curriculum?:
Recycling containers are in each classroom. Whenever an activity is finished, the teac her automatically says something like, "Now where do the scraps of paper go?" When papers are handed back, if the student does not want to take them home, they go into the recycling container. In other words, it is an automatic across the curriculum that a student is to recycle. Teachers are also encouraged to recycle.
Accomplishments:
Each week the R-Squad rescues approximately 200 pounds of paper items from our school (school papers, catalogs, project paper, cardboard, food cans from the kitchen, etc.). This amounts to 800-1000 pounds a month that is not landfilled. This year the R-Squad wrote a grant for recycling containers from the Beverage Industry and Coca Cola. We received 9 large plastic coca cola bottles for recycling of plastic and aluninum cans on school grounds. It has really increased the amount of plastic containers recycled and prevented from going into the landfill. We also received a Youth as Resources grant to purchase 500 cloth grocery bags that were distributed to all staff and students at school, to the local Senior Citizens Center, the bank, the grocery store, and HeadStart. The local grocery store owner reports having these bags brought into the store, cutting down the number of plastic bags being used. Along with that grant, R-Squad picked up 60 33-gallon bags of trash around the Onaga area on Global Youth Serve Day.
