How are you incorporating your environmental projects into your school's curriculum?:
A representative from the local recycling center visits my classroom each nine weeks. We get copies of the Kansas Kids Can newspaper. My 4th graders weekly pick up and sort all the recycle materials from the elementary and take it to the maintenance barn where it is put in gaylords or trash carts. Later it is hauled to the local recycling center. The 4th graders pick up and sort newspapers, magazines/catalogs, white paper, mixed paper, cardboard, chipboard, glass, milk jugs, water bottles, pop cans, steel cans, colored plastics, mixed plastics, telephone books, plastic bags, etc.
The 4th grade did a service project in January volunteering to help out at the recycling centers the two days it was open. We received a PTO grant which allowed us to purchase more recycle wastebaskets for the classrooms and a composter for the IRC garden. We put peelings from our FFVP (Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program)in it. The 4th grade conducted an all-school assembly about what materials can be recycled.
