How are you incorporating your environmental projects into your school's curriculum?:
The students have used their math skills to plan and help build the hoop house. They found the perimeter of the area so that we could fence the area. They took measurements and developed a floor plan for the raised beds. The students will study the life cycle of plants, seasonal changes and its effect on plants and they will learn how to grow produce organically. The students will be building a compost bin so that all plant materials will benefit this project. Nutrition will also be taught and practiced by incorporating the fresh produce we raise into the lunch program. The students study recycling and the effect it has on the environment. They also provide recycling pick up for the parish and the school.
We have earned the city of Emporia's Master Recycler award, have prevented thousands of pounds worth of waste products from entering the waste stream, and have constructed a 20' X 50' hoop house in which to grow our own produce. Our students received the Standard of Excellence in Science. This is the highest category for the Kansas State Assessments
