How are you incorporating your environmental projects into your school's curriculum?:
The Environmental Committe partnered with PTA Artsmart program and grant monies funded 3 reuse artist presentations. 2nd and 4th graders took a field trip to a water treatment plant. All grades participated in a Recycling Rodeo in which every classroom collected, measured and graphed their paper and mixed recyclables for 5 weeks. Educational blurbs and updates were placed in the school newspaper which went to parents of every student. Collaberations with Artsmart continues with working with recycling artists and storytellers - and expanding its contacts within the community and the high school.
Accomplishments:
The use of recycling bins at school functions and expanded to include contracting with a company to recycle plastics, cardboard and metal. The committee continues to explore composting the school cafeteria waste. Focusing efforts in the cafeteria was an extremely effective way to provide everyone in the school with a "hands on" experience of what constitutes trash, biodegradable waste and recycables. The environmental committee has involved many members of the school community, students, staff, faculty, parents, other PTA committees and even other schools and community organizations, in an ongoing discussion and series of actions designed to address what can be done to divert recycables and biodegradeable materials from the landfill and why now is the time change our ways of thinking and behaving with regard to the care of the earth.
